UIB LECTURER SPEAKS ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN INTERNATIONAL RETREAT ON BUILDING A BETTER ASIA IN INDIA

Dr.Rina Shahrullah of Law Faculty joined an International Retreat on Building A Better Asia (BABA) in Puri, India from 8-14 February 2009. On that occasion, she presented a lecture on "Human Trafficking: A Issue Of Gender And Human Rights In The Globalization Era". She discussed her presentation with 22 participants from 9 countries, namely Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Brazil, Chile, China, Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines.

The theme of the 5th BABA Retreat is "The Common Good In Asia". The theme has four key elements: shared prosperity, common security, ecological balance and human security. The 5th group of BABA fellows will experience the leaders who have spent a lifetime building value for communities beyond borders. The activities during the BABA Retreat were visits to artisans communities, ecosystem, and heritage sites. Participants had also open spaces in which they could discuss and share their projects, ideas and insights regarding problems and issues in Asia. A number of reputable resource speakers also shared their insights with participants. The resource speakers were Professor Amitav Acharya of International Relations at American University in Washington, DC, Dr. Arabinda Acharya , the Manager of Strategic Projects at the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in the S.Rajaratnem School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Professor Louis W.Goodman, the Dean of the School of International Service, American University in Washington, DC, Dr.Lim Chong Keat of Penang, Malaysia who has been the publisher of a botanical journal Folia Malaysiana, Dr.J.G.Krishnayya, the Founder-Director of the Systems Research Institute in Pune, India, Mr.Shuichi Ohno, the Executive Director of the Nippon Foundation, Japan, Dr.M.Rajaretnam, the Convener of the BABA Retreat for China and India, Dr.Anupam Saraph, the CIO Pune City, India and Prof.M.D.Nalapat of Geopolitics and UNESCO Peace Chair, Manipal University, India. Two facilitators were Dr.Rosalie Arcala Hall of the University of the Philippines Visayas and Mr.Herry Yogaswara of the Department of Human Ecology, Research Center for Population, Indonesian Institute of Science.(law faculty)
